Résumé

Ce mémoire explore l'impact de l'European League of Football (ELF) sur la structuration et la professionnalisation du football américain en Europe, en mettant en lumière la manière dont cette ligue hybride, inspirée du modèle de la NFL, tente de combler les failles structurelles des systèmes sportifs nationaux. À travers une analyse des stratégies de médiatisation, des entretiens avec des acteurs du football américain et l'étude d'un corpus médiatique varié, cette recherche met en avant les défis et les opportunités de l'ELF dans son implantation européenne. L'étude se divise en deux grandes parties : d'une part, l'ELF comme levier de professionnalisation du football américain en Europe, et d'autre part, l'impact de son modèle sur les structures nationales et les tensions qu'il suscite. La recherche souligne que, bien que l'ELF ait contribué à la professionnalisation du sport en Europe, notamment en offrant des opportunités salariales et un cadre structuré pour les joueurs, sa stratégie médiatique et sa gouvernance centralisée rencontrent des obstacles à l’adaptation aux spécificités locales. L’étude conclut que pour se pérenniser, l’ELF devra trouver un équilibre entre son modèle nord-américain et les réalités culturelles et économiques européennes

This thesis examines the impact of the European League of Football (ELF) on the structuring and professionalization of American football in Europe, highlighting how this hybrid league, inspired by the NFL model, seeks to address the structural weaknesses of national sports systems. Through an analysis of media strategies, interviews with key stakeholders in American football, and a diverse media corpus, the research reveals the challenges and opportunities the ELF faces in its European expansion. The study is divided into two main sections: first, the ELF as a lever for the professionalization of American football in Europe, and second, the impact of its model on national structures and the tensions it creates. The research shows that while the ELF has contributed to the professionalization of the sport in Europe, particularly by providing salary opportunities and a structured framework for players, its media strategy and centralized governance face challenges in adapting to local specifics. The study concludes that for long-term sustainability, the ELF will need to balance its North American model with the cultural and economic realities of Europe.
