Résumé

Analyzing visual and narrative contents of series allows to decipher potential interactions between representations in society and in the media. This Master's thesis describes representations of menopausal women in series, in order to verify if the persistence of sexist and ageist stereotypes in our societies is also visible on screens. It will try to fill a gap in the academic literature at the intersection between gender studies, film research, and sociology. It is based on a corpus analysis of five English-speaking series’ episodes (All in the Family, The Cosby Show, Better Things, Bombay Begums and And Just Like That…) aired between 1972 and 2022. Through the study of the predominant medical approach, the social interactions on this topical issue, and the female character’s life prospects, our work will highlight how diverse serial representations of menopause are.
