<dc:description xml:lang="en" xsi:type="lille:Resume-en">Objectives : The aim of this work is to determine whether training based on the perception of effort
is an effective method in middle-distance running, enabling athletes to free themselves from their
watches and listen to their brain and their sensations.
Method : 10 middle-distance runners aged between 14 and 24, from departmental to interregional
level, carried out an individual maximum aerobic speed test (1/2 Cooper Test) to determine their
performance. They then completed a 6-week mesocycle focusing on the development of
performance-limiting factors. The experimental group (5 subjects) then underwent 24 sessions, each
session promoting the development of a limiting factor via a prescribed intensity using the
Perceived Rating of Exhaustion (RPE) with Borg's CR-10 scale. The control group (5 subjects)
followed the same sessions but the prescribed intensity was defined as a percentage of maximum
aerobic speed (MAS).
Results : The results show that performance seems to be significantly improved (p < 0.05) by
training based on perception of exertion (RPE), but also by conventional training based on MAS.
According to the statistical analysis, no method was more effective than another. From a percentage
point of view, the RPE group achieved greater improvements than the classic group.
Conclusion : Sensation training, based on the perception of exertion, seems to be an effective
method for improving performance. It allows us to move away from traditional methods and reduce
monotony in athletes. It can also enable athletes to better manage their limits, to have a real physical
and psychological understanding by listening to their body and brain, and to avoid under- or overtraining.
Managing limits in this way will also help athletes reach their full potential in competition.</dc:description>
