<dc:description xml:lang="en" xsi:type="lille:Resume-en">People suffering from intellectual disability have impaired language skills in terms of
vocabulary and syntax. An early language intervention is essential to offset these deficits. The
dialogic reading, a language teaching method based on adult and child interaction using illustrated
books, could answer this need. Several studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in the language
development of various populations, but it is not yet proven for children with intellectual disability.
The aim of this study is to analyse the effects of the dialogic reading on the expressive vocabulary
skills of children with intellectual disability attending a medical-educational institute. To carry out
this study, 23 students selected 58 children from these institutes to participate in dialogic reading
sessions. The children were randomly divided into two groups: one was trained in syntax, the other
in vocabulary. To assess their progress, we gave the participants several pretests and post-tests.
Non-parametric statistical tests were used to analyse the data collected. The results show a
significant progress in expression vocabulary tests for children trained on vocabulary. The dialogic
reading method seems to significantly improve the expressive vocabulary skills of children with
intellectual disability. The pursuit of the study will allow to increase the sample in order to increase
the statistical power of the tests. The validation of our results would enable us to propose this
method to professionals working with intellectually disabled children. The dialogic reading could
also be applied in the context of speech therapy or parental support.</dc:description>
