<dc:description xml:lang="en" xsi:type="lille:Resume-en">Aphasia leads to language and communication disorders. It is frequently associated with more
general cognitive disorders. The i-MELfr assessment battery was developed in Quebec. It responds
to a clinical need by offering a linguistic and functional evaluation of the disorders and respects precise
psychometric criteria. In order to allow its clinical use in France, we carried out a cross-cultural
validation. We carried out tests on 100 volunteer French control subjects to whom we matched 100
subjects from the Quebec normative sample according to three socio-demographic variables: gender,
age group and education class. We analyzed the influence of these factors on the results of the two
samples and then conducted a cross-cultural comparison of the results. This study focused on the
analysis of three domains : Communicative portrait, Prosody and Related cognitive skills.
The French results showed a number of significant effects of variables on the tests in these
three domains, unlike the Quebec analyses which showed only a gender effect on one test. The comparison
of the results obtained by the French and Quebec subjects suggests that some tests in the three
domains are affected by cross-cultural differences. This difference is really significant for three tests
belonging to the Related Cognitive Skills domain.
In general, the differences in results between the two samples are small overall, which suggests
that the tool is understandable and usable with a French population. Nevertheless, they should
be taken into account, as well as the effect of the variables.</dc:description>
