Dans l'étude 1, nous avons examiné la relation entre l'étendue et la profondeur du vocabulaire et le niveau socio-économique. Trois aspects ont été pris en compte. Nos résultats montrent que le statut socio-économique a une incidence significative tant sur l'étendue que sur la richesse du vocabulaire. Nous avons également constaté que l'impact du statut socio-économique sur la richesse du vocabulaire dépend des tâches utilisées. Ces résultats soulignent l'importance de prendre en compte ces deux aspects du vocabulaire et d'accorder une attention particulière aux mesures utilisées lorsqu'on évalue le vocabulaire des enfants. Ne pas tenir compte du contexte dans lequel évoluent les enfants peut conduire à sous-estimer leurs connaissances lexicales. Une explication possible de l'impact élargi du statut socio-économique est que les enfants issus de milieux socio-économiques défavorisés, qui sont souvent peu exposés au vocabulaire, peuvent avoir moins d'occasions de renforcer les relations sémantiques au sein de leur vocabulaire existant, ce qui réduit non seulement la quantité de mots qu'ils connaissent, mais aussi la profondeur de leur vocabulaire. Une question pertinente qui peut se poser est de savoir dans quelles conditions les enfants acquièrent des connaissances lexicales de haute qualité qui contribuent à la richesse de leur vocabulaire, le rendant bien interconnecté et utile pour la compréhension et l'apprentissage continu. Parmi une multitude de possibilités, nous avons examiné l'impact de la modalité sur l'intégration des représentations lexicales au fil du temps comme première étape de l'apprentissage des mots. Dans les études 2 et 3, nous avons examiné comment les mots appris par voie orale et écrite s'intégraient au lexique au fil du temps. Nous avons pris en considère la distinction théorique entre la configuration lexicale et la lexicalisation. La configuration lexicale fait référence à la connaissance générale d'un mot, telle que la forme qui peut émerger après la première rencontre avec le mot, tandis que la lexicalisation fait référence au moment où un mot nouveau s'intègre au lexique et produit des effets lexicaux au fil du temps, notamment une reconnaissance plus rapide et une compétition lexicale.Pour examiner ces processus, les enfants ont appris des mots réels dans différentes conditions d'apprentissage, la modalité d'exposition étant systématiquement contrôlée. Nous avons évalué leur connaissance des mots nouvellement appris immédiatement après l'apprentissage afin de saisir la configuration lexicale, puis à nouveau une semaine plus tard pour évaluer la lexicalisation. Cette approche nous a permis de suivre le développement des représentations orthographiques, phonologiques et sémantiques au fil du temps. L'étude 2 a montré que la modalité peut influencer l'intégration des représentations lexicales (c'est-à-dire l'orthographe, la phonologie et la sémantique). Plus précisément, nous avons constaté que l'apprentissage à partir de supports écrits facilitait l'acquisition de la forme d'un mot, tandis que l'apprentissage oral semblait favoriser davantage l'intégration sémantique après une semaine. L'étude 3 a démontré que l'exposition orthographique seule produisait des résultats d'apprentissage comparables à ceux observés après une exposition séquentielle à la phonologie et à l'orthographe. En d'autres termes, une exposition préalable à la forme phonologique d'un mot n'améliorait pas de manière significative l'acquisition des représentations lexicales. Dans l'ensemble, ces résultats soulignent l'importance de prendre en compte non seulement la quantité de vocabulaire, mais aussi la qualité des représentations lexicales, ainsi que la modalité par laquelle les enfants rencontrent et apprennent les mots. In this study, we focus on understanding children's vocabulary and their word-learning processes. In Study 1, we present evidence that socioeconomic status significantly impacts both the breadth and depth of vocabulary. We also found that the impact of socioeconomic status on vocabulary depth depends on the tasks used. These findings suggest the importance of considering both aspects of vocabulary and paying attention to the measures used when addressing children's vocabulary. Failing to consider children's contexts may result in overlooking their vocabulary knowledge. One possible explanation for the extended impact of socioeconomic status is that children from low-socioeconomic status, who often have limited exposure to vocabulary, may have fewer opportunities to strengthen semantic relationships in their existing vocabulary, reducing not only the quantity of words with which they are familiar, but also the depth of their vocabulary. One reasonable question that may arise is under what conditions children acquire high-quality lexical knowledge that contributes to the depth of their vocabulary, making it well-interconnected and useful for comprehension and ongoing learning. Of myriad possibilities, we examined the impact of modality on the integration of lexical representations over time as a first step in word learning.In Studies 2 and 3, we investigated how words that were learned through oral and written modalities were integrated into the lexicon over time. We considered the key theoretical distinction between lexical configuration and lexicalization. Lexical configuration refers to the general knowledge of a word, such as the form that might emerge after the initial encounter with the word, while lexicalization refers to when a novel word becomes integrated into the lexicon and exhibits lexical effects over time, including faster recognition and lexical competition. To examine these processes, children were trained on real words under different learning conditions while exposure modality was systematically controlled for. We assessed their knowledge of the newly learned words immediately after training to capture lexical configuration and again one week later to evaluate lexicalization. This approach allowed us to track the development of orthographic, phonological, and semantic representations over time. Study 2 showed that modality can impact the integration of word representations (i.e., orthography, phonology, and semantics). Specifically, we found that learning through written material facilitated acquisition of a word's form, while learning through speech produced stronger evidence of semantic integration after one week. Study 3 demonstrated that orthographic exposure alone produced learning outcomes comparable to those observed following sequential phonological and orthographic exposure. In other words, prior exposure to the phonological form of a word did not substantially enhance the acquisition of word representations. Taken together, these findings highlight the importance of considering not only the quantity of vocabulary, but also the quality of lexical representations, as well as the modality in which children encounter and learn words.
