<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Global warming and its consequences for both terrestrial and marine species is a key ecological issue. Observations over the last few decades reveal a variety of changes affecting certain organisms, notably the tendency for them to become smaller and more geographically isolated as temperatures increase. These two parameters are crucial, because they directly influence the conservation status of these species: by reducing their body-size and their geographical distribution, it will be more difficult for them to maintain their position in the environment, and therefore they are more likely to become extinct. The aim of this work is to determine whether the observations made on a human scale are also visible throughout the Phanerozoic, in deep time. The main objective is to explore the impact and possible relationship between temperature, body-size and the biogeographical distribution of species, based on an empirical study of the fossil record of marine ectotherms - bivalves. The first study evaluates the hypothesis that the biodiversity dynamics of bivalves were affected by biotic and abiotic changes in the environment throughout the Phanerozoic. Contrary to initial expectations, the overall diversity of bivalves does not appear to have been disrupted, and has increased almost continuously to the present day. This resilience - particularly in the face of five major biotic crises - can be explained by the succession of four evolutionary faunas over time, all responding to global ecological changes. The second study estimates the influence of temperature on the body-size and biogeographical distribution of bivalves on a large scale. Similar to diversity, bivalves do not show variation in body-size or geographical distribution across all stages of the Phanerozoic; however, species show a certain sensitivity to periods of warming and cooling. The macroecological pattern is thus complex, but tends to reflect what is observed today. The final study explores the link between temperature, body-size and biogeographical distribution in the light of two fundamental macroecological rules associated with the latitudinal distribution of species: Bergmann's and Rapoport's rules. In contrast with the expected trend, bivalves show a decrease in their geographical distribution at the poles, but a general increase in their body-size, equally during periods of warming and cooling. Together, these results provide a perspective on the effects of current climate warming, emphasising the complexity of responses over large scales of time and space.</dcterms:abstract>
