<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Geopolymers, as a promising and sustainable alternative to conventional cementitious materials, have attracted growing attention for various engineering applications. In-depth investigations are still needed for characterization and description of their short and long terms performances under complex conditions. In this thesis, we present a novel experimental study on the physical, mechanical and transport properties of metakaolin (MK)-based geopolymers, in relation with the microstructure, compositions and loading conditions. The present work is devoted to a large range of materials, including geopolymer paste, geopolymer mortar, glass fiber (GF)-reinforced composite, and carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced composite.Geopolymer paste is first investigated as the reference material. The key issue is to investigate influences of curing age and confining stress on the micro-structure evolution, mechanical behavior and permeability of MK-based geopolymer materials. The setting time, bulk density, porosity, permeability and pore structure are first evaluated. Uniaxial and triaxial compression tests are performed to characterize stress-strain relations, failure strength and modes. It is found that with increasing curing age, the bulk density increases, while the porosity, pore volume and permeability decrease. In contrast, the Young's modulus and failure strength (both cohesion and internal friction angle) increase. Under confining pressure, the geopolymer paste exhibits a pronounced volumetric compaction. Higher confining pressure enhances both failure strength and ductility, leads to a transition in failure mode from axial splitting to inclined shearing, and induces irreversible changes in pore structure.Standard sand is incorporated into the paste matrix to produce MK-based geopolymer mortar (MKGM). Compared with the pure paste, the presence of sand particles reduces the relative water content, decreases workability, and accelerates setting process. The filling effect of sand particles markedly decreases porosity, produces a denser pore structure, lowers volumetric compression, and leads to a clear transition from compaction to dilation during failure process. At low confining pressures ([dollar]sigma_3 < 10[dollar] MPa), the MKGM exhibits lower strength than the paste. However, at higher confining pressure ([dollar]sigma_3 ge 10[dollar] MPa), the mechanical strength of MKGM becomes higher than that of paste. Therefore, the presence of sand particles induces a higher pressure-dependency with an increase of internal frictional angle. The inherent brittleness of geopolymers raises concerns regarding engineering reliability and durability. To address this limitation, geopolymer materials are reinforced by different types of fibers. In this work, GF and CF are incorporated into MKGM. The main results show that there is a strong inter-connectivity between mortar and fibers. The presence of fibers restrict aggregate mobility, accelerate setting, and reduce fluidity. Owing to their large surface area and high surface energy, those fibers promote matrix densification and generate a more uniform mesoporous structure. Their uniform dispersion creates a three-dimensional matrix-fiber connection network that suppresses pore formation and crack propagation, thereby reducing porosity and permeability while improving mechanical strength and ductility. Although both GF and CF enhance performance, GF provides a cost-efficient improvement, whereas CF delivers higher strength and superior crack-controlling capacity, resulting in a more pronounced reinforcement effect.</dcterms:abstract>
