<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">The rapid development of renewable energy technologies necessitates efficient energy storage systems to address the intermittent and unstable nature of solar and wind energy sources. Among emerging storage solutions, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) stand out as promising candidates for next-generation miniaturized energy storage devices due to their superior power density and cycling stability. My thesis work is focused on the design and characterization of high performance and flexible micro-supercapacitors through cost-effective approaches.Chapter I introduces the fundamental mechanisms of supercapacitors, methodologies for synthesizing nano- and micro-structured supercapacitors, and a concise overview of active electrode materials along with their intrinsic properties. Recent strategies aimed at enhancing the power density, energy density, and cycling stability of supercapacitors are also reviewed. To address existing challenges, I have analyzed and proposed key solutions including the integration of laser processing and mask-assisted spray-coating techniques, enabling scalable and diversified production of supercapacitors. Additionally, defect engineering (hydrogen vacancies) was employed to enhance the electrochemical performance of active materials, consequently improving the energy density of supercapacitors.Chapter II details the experimental procedures and characterization techniques employed throughout the research.Chapter III presents the fabrication of flexible planar MSCs based on MXene using a mask-assisted spray-coating method coupled with laser processing. Utilizing cost-effective and scalable laser techniques, porous interdigitated laser-induced graphene (LIG) structures were successfully constructed on polyimide substrates. The ease and versatility of spray-coating enabled rapid fabrication of MXene-based supercapacitors on various substrates and large-scale production of MSC arrays to meet practical demands. Notably, the additive-free MXene ink formulation, containing no binary solvent systems, offered environmentally friendly characteristics with excellent electrochemical performance at milligram-scale MXene loadings. This versatile direct ink spraying technique highlights the significant potential of additive-free MXene inks for scalable production and integration into printed electronic components.Chapter IV introduces an innovative asymmetric micro-supercapacitor (AMSC) design employing laser-induced graphene electrodes functionalized with hydrogen vacancy-rich cobalt-nickel layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH(v)). Cost-effective laser processing and electrodeposition techniques were combined to create porous interdigitated LIG structures functionalized with CoNi-LDH(v) as cathode and FeOOH as anode materials. The resulting LIG-CoNi-LDH(v)//LIG-FeOOH AMSCs demonstrated enhanced electrochemical properties, including a wide operating voltage window (0-1.8 V) in PVA/LiCl gel electrolyte, superior areal capacitance of 38.28 mF cm?², volumetric capacitance of 5.60 F cm?³ at 0.25 mA cm?², robust mechanical durability, and remarkable cycling stability with 92% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, the device exhibited excellent compatibility with various cations (Li?, Na?, K?, and Ca²?) in neutral electrolytes. Integration with solar cells and commercial LED devices demonstrated practical feasibility for flexible, self-powered electronics. This research provides promising avenues for enhancing MSC performance via defect engineering and hybrid materials integration, promoting scalable and economically viable energy storage solutions.</dcterms:abstract>
