En prenant pour corpus ses livres publiés, la recherche s'attache à cerner la singularité de son style photographique. D'abord envisagée à partir d'une tension entre approche poétique et documentaire, l'analyse iconographique amène à mobiliser la métaphore du miroir inquiet, afin de rendre compte d'une oeuvre qui refuse toute lecture univoque. Si les images de Graciela Iturbide se présentent comme le reflet d'une réalité (mexicaine ou autre), leur ouverture herméneutique invite à les aborder dans le mouvement de leurs significations. Trois volets, organisés de manière chrono-thématique, éclairent cette dynamique. Dans un premier temps, la notion d'écart est étudiée à partir des premiers travaux de la photographe, qui témoignent de la vie indigène et populaire du Mexique. Cette perspective permet d'explorer différents niveaux de distanciation entre l'image et son objet : de la surprise qui ouvre un hiatus avec la réalité, au documentaire, en passant par l'univers autonome que forgent les images. De ce décalage entre réalité et représentation surgissent des présences qui ne se comprennent qu'à partir de leur disparition possible, laquelle devient l'horizon de l'image. Cette absence se manifeste à la fois dans les autoportraits de la photographe -révélant sa posture auctoriale -, dans la douleur qui traverse l'ensemble de son travail et dans la relation qu'elle entretient avec une certaine vision du sacré. Enfin, dans la dernière période, les figures humaines disparaissent progressivement pour laisser place aux choses et à leur silence. Ce mutisme photographique, marqué par une atmosphère de profonde solitude, ouvre la voie à une nouvelle forme d'expression visuelle qui, à rebours du langage articulé, se fait geste. This PhD dissertation focuses on the work of the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide (Mexico City, 1942), a major figure in contemporary Latin American photography. Using her published books as the primary corpus, the study aims to capture the singularity of her photographic style. Initially approached through the tension between poetic and documentary perspectives, the iconographic analysis mobilizes the metaphor of the troubled mirror to account for a body of work that resists any univocal interpretation. While Graciela Iturbide's images present themselves as reflections of reality (Mexican or otherwise), their hermeneutic openness invites reading them within the movement of their meanings. Three chronologically and thematically organized sections illuminate this dynamic. First, the notion of gap is examined through the photographer's early works, which document indigenous and popular life in Mexico. This perspective allows for an exploration of various levels of distance between image and object: from the surprise that opens a hiatus with reality, to the documentary, and through to the autonomous universe that the images themselves create. From this disjunction between reality and representation emerge presences that can only be understood in relation to their possible disappearance, which becomes the horizon of the image. This absence manifests both in Graciela Iturbide's self-portraits—revealing her authorial stance—in the pervasive sense of pain across her work, and in her engagement with a certain vision of the sacred. Finally, in her later period, human figures progressively disappear, giving way to things and their silence. This photographic muteness, marked by an atmosphere of profound solitude, opens the path to a new form of visual expression that, in contrast to articulated language, takes the form of a gesture.
