<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Across all domains of science, variability has often been perceived as a drawback. This remains especially true for microelectronics, as industrialization commands a high degree of reproducibility and repeatability. Yet, even though effort has been put into limiting this phenomena, organic electronics remains intrinsically variable by nature. Instead of fighting against it, would it be possible to use it to our advantage? With the limitations imposed by the current architecture of computers and the physical barriers to increasing density on integrated circuits, it appears essential to start exploring new routes to perform computing. This work reports on the development of a new class of morphology-dependent hardware grown by AC electropolymerization. This easy-to-perform fabrication technique stands out not only as an alternative to traditional fabrication methods but as a novel fabrication route of its own, paving the way for the bottom-up growth of brain-inspired polymer dendrites that demonstrate unique structure-properties relationships.First, we studied the influence of the electrochemical environment on the morphology and electrical properties of the electrogenerated PEDOT:PSS fibers, defining the conditions in which growth could be observed. We then demonstrated the ability of these unusual devices to perform brain-inspired operations such as short-term plasticity, and highlighted their potential as an electrochemical classifier, in particular for the detection of bursts of voltage. When grown into a network, cross-talking between fibers means that the network influences itself during operation as they share the same electrolytic environment. We took advantage of this behavior to perform unconventional computing with such polymer fiber networks, implementing quasi-linear to nonlinear operations. Due to the complex dynamics that arise in these systems, we demonstrated in materio computing abilities that result in the possibility to perform spatiotemporal information processing with these devices. The unusual and asymmetric morphology of polymer fibers, easily achieved through electropolymerization, is key to these properties. In addition, the intrinsic stochasticity of electropolymerization ensures the uniqueness of such systems. Finally, having highlighted the computing and detection possibilities offered by PEDOT:PSS dendrites, we explored the possibility to perform 2D in vitro electrophysiology with dendritic electrodes. This work brings to light the advantages of electrogenerated objects and their unusual morphology in the framework of unconventional computing, paving the way for a new class of brain-inspired and morphology-dependent hardware.</dcterms:abstract>
