High-tech sexo-semiotics & grammar of the future Numérique Art Media Technologie Sexualités Futur Digital Art Media Technology Sexuality Future Art moderne Culture numérique Médias Technologie Sexualité Cette thèse de création en art s'ancre dans le grand récit de la technologie occidental et prend pour point de départ l'article « Exterminer les fœtus : avortement, désarmement, sexo-sémiotique de l'extraterrestre », publié en 1984, de la chercheuse australienne Zoë Sofoulis. Sa publication en français et l'exposition de sa traduction, intitulée « Jupiter Space » a constitué le premier terrain d'investigation théorique et plastique de cette thèse. Poursuivant l'hypothèse de Sofoulis selon laquelle nous avons besoin d'une perspective « soucieuse de la poétique et de l'érotique des outils », cette recherche vise à cerner les opérations « sexo-sémiotiques » et rhétoriques à l'œuvre dans les discours de sécurité nationale et les représentations du progrès techno-scientifique, et leurs effets performatifs sur le maintien d'un certain ordre symbolique et social qui, selon la chercheuse, cannibalise les corps et les terres, « effondre » le futur sur le présent et « extraterrestrialise » ses artefacts excrémentiels. La partie écrite de cette thèse retrace le futurisme à l'œuvre de 1984 à nos jours, les liens qui unissent technique et érotique, et ceux qui séparent technologie et corps dans les représentations de la technologie, circonscrivant une technopornographie d'État mortifère et dissociative propre aux sociétés occidentales. Pour la génération née au milieu des années 1980 et pour celles qui suivent, le sillon creusé par Sofoulis reste aussi urgent que lisible sous un nouveau jour qui appelle à son actualisation : comment saisir la grammaire du « futur effondré », quarante ans après sa formulation par Sofoulis ? Que signifie aujourd'hui « défendre la vie » et agir « au nom des générations futures » dans le contexte que nous connaissons ? La partie plastique de cette thèse figure une érotique de la technologie alternative, qui postule un autre fondement de l'histoire des technologies où l'inquiétude des corps et l'indétermination des affects sont cruciaux ; où échapper à la capture dans le langage est une condition de la médiation du monde. This practice-based doctoral research in visual arts is rooted in the grand narrative of Western technology, and takes as its starting point the article “Exterminating fetuses: abortion, disarmament, sexo-semiotics of the extraterrestrial”, published in 1984, by Australian researcher Zoë Sofoulis. Its publication in French and the exhibition of its translation, entitled “Jupiter Space”, provided the first field of theoretical and plastic investigation for this research. Pursuing Sofoulis' hypothesis that we need a perspective “concerned with the poetics and erotics of tools”, this research aims to identify the “sexo-semiotic” and rhetorical operations at work in national security discourses and representations of techno-scientific progress, and their performative effects on the preservation of a certain symbolic and social order which, according to the researcher, cannibalizes bodies and lands, “collapses” the future onto the present and ”extraterrestrializes” its excremental artifacts. This dissertation recounts futurism at work from 1984 to the present day, the links that unite technology and erotics, and those that separate technology and the body, outlining a deadly and dissociative nation-state technopornography. For the generation born in the mid-1980s and for those that followed, the path carved by Sofoulis remains as urgent as it is readable under a new perspective that calls for its updating: how can we grasp the grammar of the “collapsed future”, forty years after Sofoulis formulated it? What does it mean to “defend life” and act “on behalf of future generations” in the context we know today? The visual art part of this research presents an alternative erotics of technology, and posists another basis for the history of technology, where the anxiety of bodies and the indeterminacy of affects are crucial; where escaping capture in language is a condition for the mediation of the world.
