L'analyse de la Notitia urbis Constantinopolitanae (NuC) - point de départ de la thèse - et celle des sources produites dans le cadre de l'exercice du pouvoir (documentation législative et conciliaire, monnayage, vestiges archéologiques) laissent apparaître une image du prince et de sa manière de gouverner, autre que celle qu'a retenue l'historiographie. La NuC contient un « discours impérial ». Elle est élaborée de façon à donner une image particulière de Constantinople au moment de sa rédaction : celle d'une ville théodosienne, d'une capitale orthodoxe d'un Empire désormais chrétien. Le document affirme la supériorité de Théodose II par rapport au fondateur, Constantin. L'étude des édifices et des monuments construits par Théodose II montre un investissement déterminé de sa part. C'est lui qui a porté, à un point extrême, la transformation de Constantinople en une ville théodosienne. L'étude de ses pérégrinations dans le « grand Constantinople » montre qu'il se déplace beaucoup, pour diverses raisons. Les femmes théodosiennes ont joué un rôle notable dans la représentation de leur dynastie. Elles ont contribué à fortifier le lien entre les Théodosiens et Constantinople. Elles sont intervenues dans la monumentalisation de la capitale et dans la christianisation de son paysage. Les guerres menées par Théodose II dans les années 420 (la guerre de 421-422, contre les Perses et la guerre de 425, contre l'usurpateur Jean dans la partie occidentale de l'Empire) et les victoires du souverain ont eu un impact majeur dans plusieurs domaines. D'abord dans la monumentalisation de Constantinople. Des monuments commémoratifs ont été élevés à des endroits clefs de la ville théodosienne : une statue équestre au forum de Théodose Ier et la Porte Dorée. Ensuite, elles sont à l'origine d'un développement de l'idéologie de la victoire et de l'iconographie du souverain victorieux, avec l'apparition d'un nouveau thème, celui de l'empereur tenant un globe crucigère. La victoire de 425 a, en outre, modifié l'équilibre géopolitique entre les deux parties de l'Empire, au profit de l'Orient. La mise en perspective des diverses sources relatives à ces événements laisse apparaître le discours que la cour impériale diffuse alors et permet de dater plus finement la publication de la NuC. Contrairement à une idée répandue, le thème de la victoire impériale est fondamental sous Théodose II. The document asserts the superiority of Theodosius II over the founder, Constantine. The study of the buildings and monuments constructed by Theodosius II shows a determined investment on his part. It was he who brought, to an extreme point, the transformation of Constantinople into a Theodosian city. The study of his wanderings in “greater Constantinople” shows that he moved around a lot, for various reasons. Theodosian women played a notable role in representing their dynasty. They helped to strengthen the link between the Theodosians and Constantinople. They intervened in the monumentalization of the capital and in the Christianization of its landscape. The wars waged by Theodosius II in the 420s (the war of 421-422, against the Persians and the war of 425, against the usurper John in the western part of the Empire) and the victories of the sovereign had a major impact in several areas. First in the monumentalization of Constantinople. Memorials were erected at key locations in the Theodosian city: an equestrian statue at the forum of Theodosius I and the Golden Gate. Then, they are at the origin of a development of the ideology of victory and of the iconography of the victorious sovereign, with the appearance of a new theme, that of the emperor holding a cruciger globe. The victory of 425 also modified the geopolitical balance between the two parts of the Empire, to the benefit of the East. Putting the various sources relating to these events into perspective reveals the discourse that the imperial court then disseminated and allows us to date the publication of the NuC more precisely. Contrary to widespread belief, the theme of imperial victory was fundamental under Theodosius II.
