Cette proposition déplace la focale sur l'hôpital comme milieu habité et construit, au lieu d'un simple « environnement » bâti, pour interroger davantage les spatialités que l'« espace » et considérer le point de vue des habitants en remettant en question leur statut d'« usagers ». Le positionnement choisi consiste à examiner la configuration spatiale comme ressource et condition de l'action, à observer la réalité vécue de ses acteurs - qui ne sont pas des utilisateurs éphémères d'un espace neutre -, et d'y intégrer le contexte politique, sanitaire et social de l'hôpital, en plus de sa matérialité physique. Pour ce faire, cette recherche s'appuie sur une enquête ethnographique réalisée dans les services pédiatriques de deux hôpitaux lillois. L'enquête s'est concrétisée, entre autres, par 18 mois d'observation participante, principalement dans des services d'hospitalisation, des conversations informelles et des entretiens formels avec des membres du personnel hospitalier, des soignés, des accompagnants et des visiteurs. Ainsi, l'appareillage méthodologique a consisté en des biais et des outils pluridisciplinaires, empruntés aussi bien à l'architecture qu'à la sociologie et à l'anthropologie de l'espace, qui se sont vus associés et adaptés aux particularités du terrain hospitalier et à ses conditions. L'interprétation des matériaux empiriques a suivi cette même logique méthodologique avec un ancrage théorique décloisonné. En effet, l'angle privilégié a relié l'architecture à la socio-anthropologie à chaque étape de la recherche. Quant à l'approche interprétative, elle s'est enrichie des concepts d'« habiter », de « topologie », de « spatialité » - sans oublier les définitions d'« espace », « lieu » et « territoire » - tels qu'ils sont développés en géographie, philosophie et psychologie sociale. Et ce, afin de questionner les relations de réciprocité entre le vécu spatial et social des habitants hospitaliers ainsi que la conception architecturale du bâtiment. La recherche s'attache à comprendre, d'une part, la perception et l'habiter des services hospitaliers étudiés : comment ses habitants s'adaptent à l'espace architectural et l'adaptent à leur quotidienneté, par l'inscription de leurs spatialités, intentionnalités, temporalités et représentations ? Et, d'autre part, en quoi l'« habiter » permet-il de saisir la complexité du(des) milieu(x) hospitalier(s) et les dimensions multiples de ses(leurs) vécus ? Les questions soulevées, les méthodes élaborées et les résultats obtenus pourraient renseigner sur l'expérience hospitalière, ses situations et ses temporalités pour une réflexion sur l'attention spatiale - architecturale, urbaine et paysagère - portée à l'hôpital. This thesis proposes a reorientation of the way we look at hospitals and their architecture, with a view to enriching our thinking on hospital architectural design (in France). This proposal shifts the focus from a simple built "environment" to the hospital as an inhabited and constructed environment, questioning spatialities rather than "space", and considering the point of view of inhabitants by questioning their status as "users". The chosen positioning consists in examining the spatial configuration as a resource and condition for action, observing the lived reality of its actors - who are not ephemeral users of a neutral space - and integrating the political, health and social context of the hospital, in addition to its physical materiality. To this end, this research is based on an ethnographic survey carried out in the pediatric departments of two hospitals in Lille (Northern France). The investigation involved 18 months of participants observation, mainly in the hospital's environment. We conducted informal conversations and formal interviews with hospital staff, patients, carers and visitors.Thus, the methodological set consisted of several biases and multidisciplinary tools, borrowed from architecture as well as from sociology and the anthropology of space, which were combined and adapted to the particularities of the hospital site and its conditions. The interpretation of the empirical material followed the same methodological logic, based on theoretical work and multidisciplinary concepts. In fact, at every stage of the research, the architecture was linked to socio-anthropology. As for the interpretative approach, it was enriched by the concepts of "inhabitation", "topology" and "spatiality" - not forgetting the definitions of "space", "place" and "territory" - as developed in geography, philosophy and social psychology. The goal is to explore the reciprocal relationships between the spatial and social experiences of hospital residents and the architectural design of the building. On one side, the research aims to understand the perception and inhabitation of the hospital services under study: how do its inhabitants adapt to the architectural space and adapt it to their daily lives, through the inscription of their spatialities, intentionalities, temporalities and representations? And, in the other side, how does "inhabiting" enable us to grasp the complexity of the hospital environment(s) and the multiple dimensions of its (their) experiences? The questions raised, the methods developed, and the results obtained could inform us about the hospital experience, its situations and temporalities, which will lead us to further reflections on the spatial attention - architectural, urban and landscape - paid to the hospital.
