Cette philosophie met en effet l'accent sur les notions de procès et d'organisme, et à ce titre, elle se prête tout particulièrement à l'étude des changements que traversent les sociétés au cours de leur histoire. Il ne s'agit pas pour autant de proposer une simple application des concepts métaphysiques de Whitehead au champ de l'étude sociologique : mon but est au contraire de montrer que la pensée de cet auteur comprend en elle-même une part de réflexion proprement sociologique, ainsi qu'une philosophie de l'histoire. Je me propose de mettre en lumière ces aspects de sa pensée à travers l'étude de textes qui leur sont directement consacrés, en mettant notamment l'accent sur plusieurs passages tirés de Science and the Modern World, d'Adventures of Ideas ainsi que de certains chapitres des Essays in Science and Philosophy. Il s'agira également de souligner la dimension pratique de la philosophie de Whitehead : toute entreprise de pensée constitue une contribution originale à l'histoire des idées, et il convient à ce titre de mettre en lumière les idéaux qui orientent toute activité spéculative, celle de Whitehead y compris. Ainsi, la philosophie de cet auteur ne contribue pas seulement à interroger la manière dont il est possible de concevoir le changement social : elle permet également de questionner la façon dont nos manières de penser peuvent elles-mêmes contribuer à des changements sociaux. The purpose of this work is to study the notion of social change, through the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead (1961-1947). The core notions of this philosophy are those of process and organism, which makes it particularly relevant when we endeavour to study the way societies change in the course of their history. My purpose, however, is not only to apply the metaphysical concepts developed by Whitehead to the field of sociological study: on the contrary, my aim is to show that the thought of this author includes in itself a proper sociological reflection, as well as a philosophy of history. I intend to shed light on these aspects of his thought, through the study of texts which are directly devoted to it, such as Science and the Modern World, Adventures of Ideas, and several chapters of his Essays in Science and Philosophy. I also intend to highlight the practical dimension of Whitehead's philosophy: any thought constitutes an original contribution to the history of ideas, and therefore, we have to shed light on the ideals which guide all speculative activity, Whitehead's included. Thus, this philosophy does not only help us understand how we may conceive of social change: it also makes helps us question the way our own thinking may contribute to social changes.
