<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">In foreign language learning, idiomatic expressions are generally considered to be “fun, interesting and enriching”. Nevertheless, their complexity, whether lexical or semantic, as well as their usage, do not make them a lexicon that is neither easy to learn nor easy to teach. This thesis proposes to study the learning of idiomatic expressions in French as a foreign language (now FLE) and to understand the role played by conscious transfer from the first language (now L1). The chosen approach is interdisciplinary; Indeed, it brings together linguistics (phraseology), psycholinguistics (the treatment of lexis) and didactics of FLE (methods of teaching foreign languages). The methodology was based on using a sample size of 40 Chinese students residing in France for more than one year and with a French level ranging from B1 to C1 (according to CECRL). This protocol allowed to collect different types of data which were used for qualitative and quantitative analyses, followed by statistical processing, in order to highlight the variables significantly influencing the nature of the transfer and its use in L2 learning. This research leads us to recommend a particular attention to the interlinguistic typology of idiomatic expressions and to consider the L1 as a source and a factor of the transfer strategy. The conscious choice of the transfer strategy depends particularly, from an interlinguistic point of view, on the type of idiomatic expression and, indirectly, on the type of relationship perceived between L1 and French. Finally, the L1 is also one of the elements that can influence the results of the tests according to the skills that the nature of tests mobilizes.</dcterms:abstract>
