Nous y défendons l'idée selon laquelle le lapsus constitue un produit social trouvant son origine dans les contraintes vécues par les individus et les structures sociales qu'ils ont intériorisées. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuyons sur un vaste corpus de lapsus (plus de 2 300 cas) commis par des participants au champ politique depuis le 19ème siècle. Après avoir étudié les usages socio-historiques du terme « lapsus » et mis en évidence les limites des explications pionnières apportées aux maladresses verbales, nous expliquons comment nous entendons procéder à une étude sociologique du lapsus. Suite à ce travail, nous dégageons des logiques très générales - de connaissance et d'action - présidant à la production de ce phénomène puis nous montrons, en nous focalisant sur les lapsus d'adresse et les lapsus statutaires, que leur formation trouve ses fondements dans des structures sociales et politiques intériorisées par leurs auteurs. Nous défendons aussi l'idée que, pour apporter une explication pertinente à ces maladresses, il s'avère nécessaire de les articuler à la trajectoire socio-biographique de celles et ceux qui les ont commises ainsi qu'à des éléments circonstanciels. En examinant la forme prise par les lapsus de notre corpus, nous montrons finalement que les lapsus à connotation politique répondent à des contraintes diverses qu'implique la participation de leurs auteurs au champ politique et mettons en évidence que les évolutions que connaissent les lapsus à connotation culturelle, juridique et économique traduisent des transformations affectant les institutions politiques ainsi que la formation et la sélection des gouvernants. Our thesis focuses on misspeaking and aims to provide for slips of the tongue (commonly referred to as « lapsus » in french) an alternative explanation to those developed in psychoanalysis and linguistics. We defend the idea that this phenomenon is a social product rooted in the constraints experienced by individuals and the social structures they have internalized. Our work relies on a large corpus of slips of the tongue (more than 2 300 cases) committed by participants in the political field since the 19th century. After studying the socio-historical uses of the term « lapsus » and highlighting the limits of the pioneering explanations for speech errors, we explain how we intend to carry out a sociological study of slips of the tongue. Then we identify very general logics of knowledge and action at the heart of their production. By focusing on misnamings and mistitlings, we show that their production is rooted in social and political structures internalized by their authors. We also assert that in order to provide a relevant explanation of these phenomena, it is necessary to articulate them with the socio-biographical trajectory of their authors as well as with circumstantial elements. By examining the form taken by the cases of our corpus, we finally show that slips of the tongue with political connotations are the product of various constraints implied by the participation of their authors in the political field and we highlight that the formal evolutions of slips of the tongue with cultural, juridical and economic connotations reflect transformations affecting political institutions as well as the school training and selection of rulers.
