The mechanical characterization of heterogeneous materials in a multiaxial loading context remains a challenge. The difficulty is multi-scale because of the impact of the microstructure, the property of the components and their interactions that strongly influence the macroscopic properties. In this PhD thesis, a material dedicated to braking friction, developed from around twenty components with different sizes, is studied. The objective is on the one hand to quantify its mechanical properties, and on the other hand to better understand the associated microstructural phenomena and the role of each constituent. To do this, an approach based on a numerical / experimental dialogue is proposed around the indentation test. The choice of this test is motivated by the nature of the loading during the braking, which is manifested by a uniaxial compression coupled with shearing. The « Brinell » spherical indenter was chosen to perform the tests. Two types of characterization by indentation test are carried out. The first is a Brinell macro-indentation test on a global scale, which aims to characterize the friction material; the second allows characterization at the component scale, using an innovative indentation test under a micro-tomograph. In order to comfort the measurements, uniaxial compression and ultrasounds tests were carried out. The quantification was proposed from an inverse registration method coupled with the decomposition of the constitutive law (in Kelvin modes). This method enables to rewrite the initial problem by uncoupling the properties on a certain number of independent modes thus making it possible to work more easily in the context of anisotropic materials.
