Une définition extensive finit par dissoudre le sens du concept : si on donne à la notion le sens vague de reprise ou d’emprunt, tout devient citation. La présente thèse vise à clarifier le lexique et à dégager une typologie cohérente dans un champ notionnel structuré par la distinction fondamentale de la citation et du réemploi. La citation musicale n’est pas la simple présence d’un fragment musical dans une nouvelle œuvre. Elle désigne l’utilisation d’un élément préexistant accompagné d’un renvoi explicite à son contexte original. La présence de ce geste référentiel distingue la citation du réemploi. Dans le réemploi, la référence n’est pas le but premier de l’emprunteur, elle est souvent neutralisée voire oblitérée. Les pratiques citationnelles renvoient au contexte du fragment cité en tant qu’il est passé, et elles impliquent une certaine conscience d’historicité. En outre, la signification d’une citation varie selon le contexte social et historique, et son fonctionnement n’est jamais garanti dans l’absolu. En passant d’une approche formelle (la citation comme énoncé enchâssé) à une approche pragmatique (la citation comme acte intentionnel), on montre que toute citation est l’inscription dans l’œuvre musicale d’un jeu dialogique du compositeur avec son suffisant auditeur. Différents modèles de jeux peuvent être utilisés pour rendre compte du rapport dynamique qui s’établit entre le compositeur et l’auditeur, du labyrinthe au jeu coopératif, en passant par la négociation et l’affrontement agonistique. The term “quotation” is commonly used to designate musical practices that are actually different. An extensive definition ends up dissolving the meaning of the concept: if the notion is given the vague meaning of re-use or borrowing, everything becomes a quote. The present PhD thesis aims to clarify the lexicon and to identify a coherent typology in a notional field structured by the fundamental distinction of quotation and re-use. Musical quotation is not the simple presence of a musical fragment in a new work. It refers to the use of a pre-existing element accompanied by an explicit reference to its original context. The presence of this referential gesture distinguishes quotation from re-use. In re-use, the reference is not the borrower's primary goal, it is often neutralized or even obliterated. Quotation practices refer to the context of the quoted fragment as it is past, and they imply a certain awareness of historicity. Moreover, the meaning of a quotation varies according to the social and historical context, and its functioning is never guaranteed in the absolute. By moving from a formal approach (the quotation as an embedded statement) to a pragmatic approach (the quotation as an intentional act), we show that every quotation is the inscription in the musical work of a dialogical game of the composer with his sufficient listener. Different models of games can be used to account for the dynamic relationship that is established between the composer and the listener, from the labyrinth to the cooperative game, via negotiation and agonistic confrontation.
