<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Nowadays, free musical improvisation is the object of numerous studies regarding its fundamental characteristics (real-time composition, problems of collective coordination, political and social effects). That said, from a philosophical standpoint, a few number of studies lay emphasis on the artistic consistency of this type of experience. The present thesis strives to build the consistency of free musical improvisation, whether solitary or collective, on the concepts of precariousness of play and dynamic support. Free musical improvisation dramatizes the precarious condition of an invention supported by a musical play with unstable balance, articulated to the irreversibility of musical temporality. It deploys an instrumental alteration whose aim is to explore and extend the palette of musical sounds. Opened from its beginning to its end, it is marked by its tactics of adjustment and its de jure incompleteness; its practice of risk is particularly rich; it requests the attention and even the support of listeners who are strongly solicited. Free improvisation is not simply ephemeral: it draws a subtle form of work, leading to a fertile perspective between the artwork’s denial and the classical ontologies of the musical work. The precarious work of free improvisation articulates the intensive performances of the game, its traces and effects, finding anchor points in the recordings or in the faithfulness of the listeners for a friable but vivacious memorial community.</dcterms:abstract>
