Note ABES La photographie prise au piège de la race Photography trapped by race Art contemporain Photographie Race Réemploi Contemporary art Photography Race Appropriation Photographie Race Dans l'art Proposer d’analyser les formes du réemploi dans l’art contemporain à la lumière de la race, c’est déplacer la grille de lecture habituellement portée sur les œuvres construites à partir d’images déjà-là. C’est aussi faire l’hypothèse que la question raciale travaille, même implicitement, les rapports entre les artistes et les photographies qu’ils et elles recherchent, sélectionnent et manipulent avec leur regard et leurs mains. Remettre en circulation les images des autres n’expose-t-il pas au risque de reconduire les assignations raciales qu’elles peuvent contenir ou d’en produire de nouvelles ? Quelles seraient alors les stratégies plastiques et visuelles mises en œuvre par les artistes pour renouveler le regard sur ces images ? Quelles seraient, dans le même ordre d’idées, les démarches déployées pour les montrer autrement ? En choisissant de prêter attention à des cas problématiques d’œuvres occidentales employant par exemple des photographies de lynchages américains, des mug shots, des clichés de nourrices noires ou de familles chinoises, l’ambition de cette thèse sera d’interroger les réponses plastiques apportées par les artistes pour résoudre, reformuler ou feindre d’ignorer les ambiguïtés de la relation historique, théorique et technique entre le médium photographique et la construction raciale. L’attention particulière portée aux œuvres comme à leurs sources photographiques servira de boussole afin d’apprécier les déplacements opérés par les artistes. Savoir d’où viennent les images, même lorsque la question ne semble pas concerner les artistes qui les utilisent, permettra de rompre avec une conception figée et paresseuse de l’image trouvée réputée orpheline ou anonyme. De cette manière, cette thèse donnera aux sujets photographiés, aux contextes de prise de vue et aux modalités d’exposition une place centrale dans l’analyse des œuvres. Avec les outils des arts plastiques et ceux de l’histoire de l’art, il s'agira ainsi d'inclure la production contemporaine dans une histoire des processus de racialisation par la photographie. Proposing to analyze the forms of reuse in contemporary art through the lens of race is to shift the reading grid usually applied to artworks constructed from pre-existing images. It is also to hypothesize that the racial question transforms, even implicitly, the relationships between the artists and the photographs they seek, select and manipulate with their eyes and their hands. Putting again the images of others into circulation, isn't it to take the risk of renewing the racial assignments these images may contain or even of producing new ones? So, which plastic and visual strategies the artists could employ to renew the gaze on these images? What would be the means to show them differently? Taking as objects of analysis a corpus of Western contemporary artworks employing photographs of American lynchings, without however being limited to it, the ambition of this thesis will be to question the plastic responses brought by the artists to resolve, reformulate or pretend to ignore the ambiguities of the historical, theoretical and technical relationship between photographic medium and racial construction. A close attention drawn to the artworks and their photographic sources will serve as a compass in order to appreciate the movements made by the artists. Knowing where the images come from, even when the question does not seem to concern the artists who directly use them will allow to break with a fixed and lazy conception of the category of found image to be deemed orphan or anonymous. This way, by analyzing the artworks, this thesis will focus specifically on the subjects photographed, on the shooting contexts and on the specific conditions of circulation of the reused images. With the tools of plastic arts and those of history of art, the aim will be to include contemporary production in a history of the processes of racialization through the photographic medium.
