Il s’agit d’un témoignage, en anglo-normand, avec un nombre non négligeable de traits picards, rédigé durant le deuxième quart du XIIIe siècle, en 5372 octosyllabes à rimes plates.Ce texte a fourni la première partie d’une chanson de geste très tardive, du dernier quart du XIVe siècle, en 18599 alexandrins, Florent et Octavien, œuvre, homogène par sa composition, qui amplifie dans sa deuxième partie l’épilogue du roman dont nous proposons l’édition.Le Romanz de Othevien est donc un ouvrage qui s’inscrit dans un nouveau cycle à son époque – mérovingien – alors même que la geste arthurienne s’essoufflait quelque peu et que la chanson de geste s’acheminait vers ce que Philip Bennet, François Suard et Claude Roussel ont défini comme « chanson d’aventures » et qui constituera l’avenir du genre épique à la fin du Moyen Âge.Plusieurs versions en langues étrangères dérivent par ailleurs du roman soit directement, soit indirectement, par l’intermédiaire de Florent et Octavien : un remaniement en prose de la première chanson, au début du XVe siècle, dont aucun manuscrit n’a survécu ; deux traductions de la même époque en moyen-anglais ; deux italiennes et, en 1587, en allemand, Kaiser Octavianus, entre autres.Octavien, empereur mythique est ami de Dagobert (Ier) dont le règne se situe de 629 à 639 ; il n’y a bien sûr plus d’Empire romain d’Occident, l’empereur d’Orient est Héraclius qui mène des guerres contre les Perses – romancées dans notre œuvre – et verra ses frontières attaquées par les Sarrasins en 634. À l’époque de la rédaction primitive, en outre, s’échafaude en France la légende de saint Denis, ainsi celle de sa céphalophorie et sa confusion avec Denis l’Aréopagite, qui devient le protecteur du roi de France. La célèbre abbaye, qui abrite les tombeaux de la quasi-totalité des souverains depuis le VIIe siècle, a été fondée justement par Dagobert.De fait, notre « roman », appelé aussi « chanson » au vers 6, débute bien quand Dagobert prend la succession de Clotaire II et se fait sacrer à Reims. Ainsi s’est dégagée l’idée que notre cycle était lui-même inscrit dans un autre, plus vaste, celui de Dagobert et d’Octavien qui comprendrait également au moins Charles le Chauve, manuscrit en grande partie inédit et Theseus de Cologne, transmis par deux manuscrits complémentaires du XIVe siècle. It is a testimony, in Anglo-Norman, with a significant number of picardisms, written during the second quarter of the thirteenth century, in 5372 octosyllables with flat rhymes (AA, BB).This text provided the first part of a very late epic song, from the last quarter of the fourteenth century, in 18599 alexandrins, Florent and Octavian, work homogeneous by its composition, which amplifies in its second part the epilogue of the “roman” whose edition we propose.The Romanz d’Othevien is therefore a work that is part of a new cycle in its time, Merovingian, at the same time that the Arthurian gesture was somewhat out of breath and that the epic song was heading towards what Philip Bennet, François Suard and Claude Roussel defined as “adventure song” that will be the future of the epic genre in the late Middle Ages.Several versions in foreign languages derive from the novel either directly or indirectly through the intermediary of Florent and Octavian : a prose reworking of the first song, at the beginning of the fifteenth century, of which no manuscript has survived ; two Italian and, in 1587, in German, Kaiser Octavianus, among others.Octavian, mythical emperor is friend of Dagobert the first whose reign lies from 629 to 639. There is of course no more a western Roman Empire, the eastern Emperor is Heraclius who leads wars against the Persians – we find echoes in our work – and will see its borders attacked by the Saracens in 634. At the time of the early writing, moreover, the legend of St Denis, as well as that of his cephalophoria and his confusion with Denys the Areopagites, which became the protector of the kings of France, was carved out in France.
