Depuis Aristote en passant par Adam Smith, l’économie a été une science normative. Il a fallu attendre les années 1930, marquées par l’influence du positivisme, pour la détacher de la morale. Amartya Sen considère que la distance créée entre l’économie et la morale a sensiblement réduit leur enrichissement. Il estime que l’économie doit être pensée en fonction des finalités humaines. Il compte redonner à l’économie un contenu normatif. Il développe donc son approche par les capabilités. L’approche par les capabilités reste une richesse tant pour les sujets abordés que pour les angles de recherche adoptés. Sen refuse de développer une théorie de la justice à l’instar de John Rawls qui garantirait l’émergence d’une société juste. Il insiste sur la nécessité de contextualiser les questions de la justice. Sen s’inscrit dans une perspective comparative. Ce sont les situations concrètes dans leur complexité et leur multidimensionnalité qui permettent d’aborder avec lucidité et efficacité la question de la justice. Une telle justice tiendrait compte des préférences et des choix de chaque individu. Sen construit son idée d’un développement fondé sur les droits de la personne. Cette thèse répond donc aux enjeux méthodologiques posés par les théories de la justice. Pour fonder développement à la mesure de l’humain, il faut une théorie de la diversité. Il est aussi nécessaire d’intégrer la dimension éthique à l’économie. Thinking about the relationship between economics and ethics is the main issue of our reflection. From Aristotle to Adam Smith, economics has been a normative science. It took until the 1930s, marked by the influence of positivism, to detach it from morality. Amartya Sen considers that the distance created between economics and morality has significantly reduced their enrichment. He believes that the economy should be designed according to human goals. He intends to restore normative content to the economy. It therefore develops its approach through capabilities. The capabilities approach remains a richness both for the subjects tackled and for the research angles adopted. Sen refuses to develop a theory of justice like John Rawls that would guarantee the emergence of a just society. He insisted on the need to contextualize questions of justice. Sen fits into a comparative perspective. It is the concrete situations in their complexity and their multidimensionality which make it possible to approach the question of justice with lucidity and efficiency. Such justice would take into account the preferences and choices of each individual. Sen is building his idea of human rights-based development. This thesis therefore responds to the methodological challenges posed by theories of justice. To base development on a human scale, you need a theory of diversity. There is also a need to integrate the ethical dimension into the economy.
