Note ABES Adolphe MESSIMY (1869-1935) héraut de la République Adolphe MESSIMY (1869-1935), herald of the Republic Messimy Radical-socialisme Député Sénateur Armée Officier Messimy Radical-socialism Deputy Senator Army Officer Messimy, Adolphe (1869-1935) Politique et gouvernement -- France -- 1870-1914 Adolphe Messimy est un homme politique de la Troisième République, aujourd’hui presque inconnu.Saint-Cyrien, breveté de l’École Supérieure de Guerre à 27 ans et promis à un brillant avenir, il démissionne de l’institution militaire en 1899, ne pouvant supporter l’attitude et les mensonges du haut commandement au cours de l’affaire Dreyfus.Élu député radical-socialiste de la Seine lors des élections de 1902, il occupe successivement les fonctions de rapporteur du budget de la Marine (1904), de la Guerre (1907 et 1908) puis des Colonies (1909 et 1910).Il est nommé Ministre des Colonies au début de 1911, avant de rejoindre le ministère de la Guerre en juin, à la suite du décès accidentel de son ami Maurice Berteaux. Spécialiste des questions militaires, il fait nommer Joffre au poste de chef d’état-major général, tout en essayant de pallier les lacunes de l’armée française. En parallèle, il aide le président du Conseil Joseph Caillaux à faire du Maroc, dès 1912, un protectorat français.De nouveau ministre de la Guerre en juin 1914, il quitte le gouvernement en août, au nom de l’Union sacrée. Chef de bataillon de réserve, il est démobilisé après quatre ans au front, en janvier 1919, seul député à terminer la guerre au grade de général de réserve à titre définitif, commandant d’une division d’infanterie.Battu aux élections législatives, il intègre de nombreux conseils d’administration de sociétés liées à l’Empire colonial avant d’être élu au Sénat en 1923. Président de la commission des Colonies puis de l’armée, il dirige l’association Colonies-sciences, très impliquée dans le développement des outres-mers. Il décède brutalement d’une attaque cérébrale le 1er septembre 1935. President of the Colonial Committee then of the army, he runs the association Colonies-sciences, highly involved in the development of the French overseas. He dies suddenly of a cerebral attack on September 1st, 1935.
