The trade of kylikes in the recent Greek archaic period : Production, distribution, consumption Artisanat Commerce Coupe à boire Coupes Grèce Antiquité Le sujet d'étude part d'un constat simple : les coupes à boire à la fin de l'époque archaïque (580-480) sont omniprésentes. La forme est produite, dans le courant du VIe siècle, dans tous les centres majeurs de production et d'exportation de vases, Corinthe, la Laconie et l'Attique : elle y connaît de manière remarquable à peu près partout la même évolution. Elles sont également très largement diffusées en Méditerranée et bien au-delà. L'objectif est donc de suivre un produit d'artisanat de la chaîne de production jusqu'à son utilisation, en passant par sa mise en vente et sa distribution : la coupe commence sa vie entre les mains du potier pour arriver aux lèvres du consommateur. C'est la vision générale et comparative qui permet d'une part d'éclairer les mécanismes qui régissent la production et le commerce des coupes, d'autre part de mettre en relation les différentes productions pour y déceler les éventuelles influences de l'une sur l'autre et d'envisager une possible concurrence. Ce travail envisage donc les tenants et aboutissants relatifs à un produit manufacturé, dont l'échantillon est très largement suffisant pour que cette étude soit significative : définition de la demande de la clientèle, si elle existe, modalités de fabrication et formes de l'offre des artisans-producteurs, modalités des transactions et formes de consommation et d'utilisation du produit. Peut-on, dès cette époque, dégager des règles qui régissent les opérations économiques autour d'un produit commun ? La difficulté est d'appréhender divers aspects économiques d'une société préindustrielle sans tomber dans une vision anachronique ou univoque d'une réalité complexe The study starts with a simple observation : at the end of the Archaic period (580-480), drinking cups are to be found everywhere. During the 6th century B.C., in every main center of pottery production and export, like Corinth, Laconia and Attica, this form was produced : it follows significantly almost everywhere the same trend. The cups are also widely distributed in Mediterranean area and beyond. The aim of this study is to follow the trajectory of a handicraft product from the production to its context of use, through sale and distribution : cup begins his life int he hands of the potter and finally reaches the consumer's lips. The overview and comparison between the above mentioned centers allow us, on one hand to better understand the process and mechanism of the production and on the other to detect the influences between these centers of production, and to take into consideration a possible concurrence. Therefore, this study is focusing on all the aspects related to a manufactured product. We are in possession of a sufficient sample that can make this study significant : possibly the definition of customer's demand, the modalities of manufacturing process and forms of supply from the producers, terms of transactions, consumption and use of the product. Can we, at this early period, investigate the patterns of organizing economic transactions around a common product ?
