<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">The present work concerns the synthesis, characterization and study of physical-chemical properties of a series of four pentadentate Schiff bases and their nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes, in different isotropic and anisotropic environments. A literature survey was first conducted on the synthesis of Schiff bases,on their modes of coordination in solution and solid state, on the physical-chemical properties of pure and doped liquid crystals, their multiple virtues and their different applications. After preparation and structural characterization of various organic ligands, their coordination mode in solid state and their behavior in solution against the nickel(II) and copper(II) were investigated. Different stœchiometries (ML, M2L, ML2or M2L2) were established in solution and solid state, depending on the structure of the organic ligand involved, the nature of the environment and that of the metal ion. Configurations of a square, octahedral and sometimes tetragonal have been established in a various solid complexes. All of the organic ligands and some of their metal complexes were finally used as doping agents against three thermotropic liquid crystals, of cyanobiphenyl type. The study of the physical-chemical properties of different pure and doped liquid crystals has been undertaken by use of three analytical techniques, including two commonly used (DSC and MOP) and a third, namely the UV-visible spectroscopy, unpublished in this area. Different interactions, like hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole interaction, π-πstacking or aggregation have been identified in various isotropic and anisotropic media. The study of the mesophase of different pure and doped liquid crystals was performed and allowed to highlight the change in some of their properties (TN, TI, TNI, TSN, ...), without destroying their mesophases. All the results obtained by DSC and MOP were found consistent to those of the UV-visible spectroscopy newly used, which confirmed the validity of the latter and the accuracy of its results, justifying its use in the field of liquid crystals.</dcterms:abstract>
