En revanche, les études portant sur leur fonctionnement n’ont été conduites que récemment dû à la difficulté d’obtention des différents paramètres biologiques des différents composants du benthos (bactérie, méiofaune, macrofaune…) indispensables à ce type d’analyses. L’objectif principal était de déterminer si la zone d’étude devait être considérée comme une entité ou bien au contraire comme plusieurs unités fonctionnelles. Une étude du réseau trophique au travers de deux techniques de modélisation, inverse et Ecopath, a été réalisée. La zone d’étude a premièrement été divisée a priori selon les deux facteurs supposés influencer le plus l’organisation trophique des communautés benthique : géographiques (Baie de Seine, Manche orientale et mer du Nord) et sédimentaires (graviers et cailloutis, sables grossiers et sables fins). La comparaison des deux types de modèles, appliqués sur chaque division, a mis en évidence le rôle clé des suspensivore dans le transfert de matière ainsi que des différences de fonctionnement entre les divisions. Le fonctionnement trophique du benthos semble apparaitre comme dépendant du type de sédiment auquel il appartient. Pour finir, une approche préliminaire évaluant la diversité des traits biologiques des invertébrés benthiques dans la zone d’étude a été effectuée. Les renseignements sur 21 traits biologiques concernant 631 espèces d’invertébrés benthiques ont été réunis permettant d’avoir une information sur les attributs fonctionnels dominant la zone d’étude. Most of the studies concerning benthic communities in the eastern part of the English Channel and southern North Sea are descriptive, serving primarily to illustrate the specific changes in the diversity and structure of benthic communities. Only recently studies have examined benthic ecosystem functions, mainly due to difficulties in obtaining sufficient functional parameters for each benthic component (bacteria, meiofauna, macrofauna...). This work investigated whether the benthic communities of the studied area have to be considered as a single unit or as a juxtaposition of functional entities. An approach through two trophic modelling methods, inverse and Ecopath has been performed. In order to test and assess relative importance of factors supposed to influence benthic trophic structure, the study area was subdivided into units defined a priori according to two main structural factors of community distribution: geographical (bay of Seine, eastern Channel and North Sea) and sedimentary patterns (gravel and pebbles, coarse sand and fine sand). Comparisons of model outputs of each division highlighted the key role of suspension organism in flow transfer among the trophic web. It also showed different properties between the divisions. Benthic trophic functioning seems to be strongly correlated with the sediment to which it belongs. Finally, a preliminary approach assessing biological trait diversity of benthic invertebrates has been performed. Information concerning 21 biological traits on 631 species has been gathered. It allowed us to have a global view of diversity and dominance of the functional attributes in the study area.
