Elle mobilise un certain nombre d'outils tant théoriques qu'empiriques développés dans la période récente, notamment les méthodes d'analyse spatiale, pour s'interroger sur l'attractivité locale des unités géographiques du pays d'accueil pour les immigrés. Notre travail est articulé autour de trois principaux objectifs. D'une part, il nous a semblé important de construire un cadre d'analyse cohérent en rassemblant et en adaptant à notre problématique les enseignements théoriques d'études migratoires, aussi bien économiques qu'issus des sciences voisines, notamment, la sociologie, et n'ayant pas explicitement pour objet d'analyser la localisation des immigrés. D'autre part, notre démarche est appliquée et comparative. Dans un cadre spatial, nous analysons la localisation des immigrés dans trois pays européens: la France, la Suisse et l'Italie. De manière générale, notre étude confirme l'existence de l'effet de réseau dans la définition des schémas de localisation des immigrés contrairement aux caractéristiques du marché de travail qui ne semblent pas jouer le rôle attractif que leur préconise la théorie. En revanche, l'étude révèle que les aménités locales expliquent en partie la décision de localisation des immigrés. Enfin, nous nous intéressons aux performances économiques des immigrés résidants dans des zones à concentration ethnique élevée et le rôle qui joue l'emploi ethnique. This thesis contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms guiding the residential choices of immigrants, especially those leading to geographical concentrations inside host countries. The thesis is rooted in recently developed theoretical and empirical advances in many fields, in particular the spatial analysis methods. This work followed three main objectives. Firstly, a consistent and sound theoretical framework has been coherently developed to conduct such an analysis. To do so, 1 synthesized results on migration, even though they did not have explicitly analyzed immigrants' location problems, from economics and related fields, in particular sociology. Secondly, 1 developed an applied comparative study of the location choices of immigrants in three European countries (France, Switzerland, and Italy) using spatial methods. ln general, the results confirm the existence of network effects in immigrants' location patterns. The results of the econometric estimations show however, that the theoretical assumption that economic factors fundamentally explain an immigrant's location decision does not prevail empirically. It is also worth noting that the model gives to local characteristics a significant role in the residential decisions of immigrants. Finally, 1 studied the economic performance of immigrants located in ethnically concentrated areas and addressed the role of ethnic employment.
