La gestion du territoire par les Néandertaliens est sans doute l'un des plus grands thèmes de cette décennie. Mais dès lors que l'on parle de territoire et non de modalités d'occupation s'ouvre un champ si vaste que ce terme nous amène au flou sémantique même du mot. Certes les études attenantes à cette thématique se sont largement développées ces dernières années si l'on en croit le nombre de travaux, colloques et ouvrages traitant de ce sujet. Néanmoins, en l'état actuel de la recherche, la restitution des espaces géographiques, et de leur gestion par les Néandertaliens n'est encore trop souvent traduite que par l'analyse de l'origine des matières premières exploitées. Le cadre fixé par les limites des sites guidant pour les Néandertaliens des choix de progression et d'itinéraires, semble conditionner le territoire lors des études. Certes si dans certaines régions, aux matériaux variés, il est envisageable de retracer en partie des voies de circulation et de déplacement, il n'en est pas de même pour le Nord de la France. Ce sont principalement les notions de territoire, de modalités d'occupation et de déplacements au travers des occupations humaines, gui sont abordées dans cette étude.

The settlement dynamics by the Neanderthal is beyond doubt one of the great topics of this decade. But once we start to talk of territory rather than modalities of occupation we open up such a vast field that we are at once confronted with the semantic vagueness of the word itself. lndeed the studies dealing with this subject matter have greatly widened over the last few years, if the number of works, conferences and books on the subject is anything to go by. Nevertheless, in the current state of research, the reconstruction of geographical spaces and their management by prehistoric man is still too often merely the result of analysis of the origin of the raw materials used. ln such studies, the framework fixed by the limits of the sites guiding choices of progression and itineraries for the Neanderthal seems to condition the territory. While in certain regions with varied materials a partial retracing of the arteries of communication and travel can be envisaged, the same cannot be said for the North of France.
