Titanium and its alloys are the biomaterials of choice for endovascular (stent) and bone (orthopaedic and dental implants) applications. Two ways were studied to improve the biocompatibility: chemical surface modification (coating) and surface structuring (roughness). As to the coatings, four oxides types (TiO2, Nb2O5, SiO2 and TiO2-SiO2) were obtained using the Sol-Gel method and spin-coating on titanium substrates. The surface structuring was achieved for the alloy TiNb10 by acid etching. The roughness rises with increasing etching time. The oxide films with a thickness of about 100 nm are homogeneous and pure, and have a good adhesion. Only the oxide TiO2 is crystalline, the others are amorphous. The TiO2 and Nb2O5 oxides are porous whereas SiO2 and TiO2-SiO2 are smooth without any pores or fissures. Moreover, all the films are corrosion resistant. After that, cytocompatibility tests were done on all oxide surfaces with endothelial cells and osteoblasts with respect to their further application. The results show that the endothelisation is improved by TiO2, Nb2O5 and TiO2-SiO2 whereas the osseointegration is enhanced by Nb2O5 and TiO2-SiO2. ln the case of the alloy TiNb10 that was only studied for endovascular applications, the endothelisation is enhanced by a decreased roughness. Further studies will optimise the roughness in order to compete with the three oxide coatings mentioned above.
